Tweak List: QuickTime

QuickTime is an award-winning cross-platform multimedia piece of software which allows Macs and Windows computers to view a wide variety of movie and picture file formats.

Sometimes referred to as the QuickTime Media Layer (QTML), QuickTime is a somewhat abstracted format which allows the creation and reading of a number of file types including:

  • JPEG
  • GIF
  • PNG
  • Photoshop
  • QuickTime Movie
  • AVI (not full on Macs)
  • MIDI, and more...

The current released version is 3.0.2.

Soon, however, QuickTime 4 will be released, and will introduce a new functionality: the ability to stream QT files. MacOS X Server will include a server for doing just that, and will perhaps position Apple as a world-class multimedia solutions vendor.

QuickTime has also been chosen as the basis for the MPEG-4 audio/video format.
