Tweak List: Mach

As it's name suggest, the Mach microkernel is a kernel. Mach's roots lie in the UNIX world.

The Mach project started in 1985 as a collegiate project at Carnegie Mellon Univeristy. Their goal was to create a powerful-but-portable kernel which could be used for a number of purposes, including SMP, and to be message-based. In fact, one of the people who worked on the Mach project at its birth is someone you may just know - Avadis Tevanian, VP of Technology (?) at Apple Computer.

Following the end of the project at CMU, the software was turned over to the Open Software Foundation for maintenance and expansion. After a long absence from active collegiate development, the University of Utah picked up the Mach project and has released Mach's first major revision in many years. The current version is 4.0.

While there hasn't ever been much commerical buzz about Mach, you may have seen it in action in MachTen for the Macintosh or as the core of OPENSTEP/Mach. Mach is used as the kernel for some flavors of Linux, and will be the center of activity for MacOS X Server and MacOS X.
