Tweak List: BSD 4.4

BSD stands for Berkeley Standard Distribution.

BSD is a well-respected, network-oriented, security-enabled, UNIX-based operating system which was originally created at the University of California at Berkeley. Thus the name!

Since its original inception, BSD has grown to adapt to the ever-changing dynamic of networking - including support for many networking protocols and standard devlopment tools. The last release directly from Cal-Berkeley was 4.4.

Since the release of BSD 4.4, the public BSD movement has split into three different sects: OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD. Each of these operating systems are based on BSD 4.4, but each have individual implementations of many additions, networking features or others.

According to Apple, MacOS X Server has a full version of BSD 4.4 at its heart, and that should open the door for many popular *BSD utilities/apps to make their way to MacOS X Server.
